![Orestes Augustus Brownson (1803-1876) [Brownson was the subject of my undergraduate (honors) essay at Harvard College and the topic of a year-long research effort. The excitement and wonder of this project—not to mention the inspiration of such Harvard professors as Perry Miller, Alan Heimert, and Donald Fleming—drew me into the field of scholarship, a wonderful demesne never sullied by exploration. I picked Brownson after hearing a student report: this curmudgeon seemed to have embraced almost every major movement of his times and I assumed—correctly as it turned out—that I could learn much about ante-bellum America by studying the career of this mercurial man in search of God. I focused on his work in The Boston Quarterly Review, which took him up to his disillusionment with democracy and his conversion to a churchly tradition. Reading: Why We Fought: America's Wars as Film and History

Book signing on evening of 16 September, beginning at 6:30pm.
All sessions will begin at 6:30pm in the downstairs meeting room of the
Stillwater American Legion, 611 South Main. No food served, but there will be coffee. (This venue is across the street from
Stillwater National Bank, 6th and Main.) There is ample parking in the
vicinity in the evening. Meeting room is on the ground floor, next to the Legion office.
Comments:
Each session will begin with a presentation by Dr. Rollins, establishing the context and the movie coverage of the war commemorated. The group will watch 30-50 minutes of film and then discuss the struggle—with veterans adding their memories and opinions about the events depicted by Hollywood films.
These sessions are designed to be interactive and those who attend should feel free to “sound off.”
