Victory at Sea (1952) was NBC’s tribute to the WWII sacrifices of American fighting men and women. The program was an instant success and is still shown on OETA during fund-raising campaigns. As a historical compilation, VAS convinced broadcast executives and TV audiences that historical programming could be both informative and entertaining. Leaping forward to our own time, The History Channel would not have been created (by NBC) had Victory at Sea not broken the ice for this genre nearly 60 years ago. The 13 hours of VAS’ symphonic music was a resounding success and CDs are still available at “record” stores everywhere.
Dr. Rollins will discuss the creative background for the series and analyze a few clips to show the artistic mix of actuality footage, narration, and music that was the hallmark of the Victory at Sea.
